Why Small Brands Are Top Scam Targets

58% of phishing attacks now target brands with revenue under $50 million

Digital Presence

Heavy reliance on digital ecosystems without proportional security measures leaves small brands vulnerable to exploitation.

Limited Resources

Lean teams lack in-house expertise to evaluate and mitigate scam risks effectively, creating security blind spots.

Scaling and Speed

High-growth focus often overlooks security as operational tempo increases, leaving gaps in protection.

Faster Payouts

Small brands are slower to detect and take down fake domains, giving scammers more time to collect fraudulent payments.

Not on the Radar

Many leadership teams haven't discussed proactive mitigation measures, leaving brands unprepared when attacks occur.

The Cost of Doing Nothing

Can your business afford to ignore the threat?

Financial Impact

  • $8,000-$15,000 average revenue loss per incident
  • $20,000+ potential exposure in legal costs and chargebacks
  • 6-12 months of lost sales momentum

Customer Trust

  • Eroded customer confidence and brand reputation
  • Negative word-of-mouth across social channels
  • Reduced customer lifetime value
  • Deterred potential new customers
  • Damage to partner relationships

Operational Burden

  • Emergency response team formation
  • PR damage control campaigns and costs
  • Support team overwhelmed with inquiries
  • Leadership focus diverted from growth
  • Lost productivity across departments

My Story

My name is Jimmy, and I am a cybersecurity intelligence analyst for the Department of Homeland Security in Colorado's Office of Emergency Management. I have a Master's Degree in International Security and Intelligence Analysis.

Before I began my Master's, I worked in brand marketing for a high-growth, direct-to-consumer apparel startup. While completing a master's degree in international security and intelligence analysis, I noticed that the apparel company I used to work for was running a promo with a suspiciously large discount. I clicked on the paid advertisement and was redirected to a website that looked just like the legitimate company's, except one letter was missing.

The scam was responsible for the company missing its revenue target, losing goodwill among loyal customers, and deterring potential new customers from making a purchase. Moreover, the operational cleanup was massive – the company was forced to create an incident response plan in real-time, work with PR partners to conduct damage control, and cancel the payout of bonuses for every employee.

I don't want this to happen to you. Scammers may be targeting your company right now. While my services are not a comprehensive cybersecurity audit, I provide a great starting point for small businesses to consider how they want to approach brand protection and risk mitigation as they mature.
